Analog Devices RF Mixer : Is it possible to design a lumped LC balun configuration in the input/output matching circuit when using the LT5560? Should I still consider a differential external transformer or hybrid balun configuration?
A lumped LC balun works only in a narrow bandwidth around the designed center frequency fc.
Here the phase difference between the two balanced ports is exactly 180 degrees.
Away from fc, the phase difference is off 180 degrees and the circuit can no longer fully convert the differential signal to single-ended.
The usable bandwidth of an LC balun is typically about 10% of fc. Linearity, noise figure, and leakage degrade rapidly away from fc.
Therefore, low-cost lumped-element LC baluns should only be used in narrowband applications.
An external transformer/balun and differential connections are recommended for wideband applications.
