Flat wire inductor for efficient design

Electronic devices are becoming more efficient and smaller. It is therefore important that electronic components are designed accordingly. To meet these demands, Würth Elektronik inductors use optimized core materials and suitable wire geometries like flat wire. The WE-XHMI series has the ability to handle saturation currents up to 56 A and high current transient peaks. The design with flat wire coil and composite core material ensures low AC copper losses and stable operation under temperature variations.

Flatwire vs. Wound Wire

The above figures show the cross sections of a cylindrical conductor and a plane conductor. The intensity of the grey colour represents the intensity of the current inside the conductor. δ is the skin depth.

Flat wire allows for a uniform distribution of the electric field and achieves the best EMC results by minimizing parasitic capacitance.

Flat wire has low copper losses, which can increase the efficiency of your power supply.

Size difference between WE-XHMI and conventional standard shielded power inductors

Flatwire allows for a smaller size and requires less space on a PCB than a comparable wirewound inductor. In a 1:1 size comparison, flatwire has a better current rating than a comparable wirewound inductor, allowing it to operate at higher currents.
