Overview
Winbond Electronics, the world's leading supplier of semiconductor memory solutions, today announced the launch of a 64Mbit 1.2 chip that delivers the large code storage and active mode power savings required by the latest generation of smart wearables and mobile devices. Announced V-Serial NOR Flash W25Q64NE.
Winbond is the world's first memory manufacturer to introduce 1.2V serial NOR flash. This product series operates over a supply voltage range of 1.14V to 1.6V and is compatible with single battery output voltages. By expanding its 1.2V serial NOR Flash series to 64Mbits, Winbond addresses the requirements of smart devices for larger code sizes. The new W25Q64NE is available in industry standard packages and pinouts, and samples are now available in smaller packages such as USON8-3x4 and WLCSP.
Product features
Winbond's 1.2V serial NOR flash reduces active mode power consumption by 3X compared to 1.8V serial NOR flash of the same density. Typically 99% of total power consumption in mobile and wearable devices is consumed in active mode. Therefore, by using Winbond's 1.2V serial NOR flash, devices with very small batteries, such as true wireless earbuds and fitness wristbands, can extend their battery life.
Winbond said: “Battery life has become a key differentiator in consumer purchasing decisions when purchasing wireless earbuds, smartwatches and more. provides a way to instantly increase
At an operating frequency of 50MHz in active read mode, a 1.8V serial NOR flash has an operating current of 4mA and a power consumption of 7.2mW. Under the same conditions, the 1.2V serial NOR flash also has an operating current of 4mA and a power consumption of 4.8mW. Replacing 1.8V serial NOR flash with 1.2V serial NOR flash provides an immediate 33% power savings.
In addition to power savings, it also offers other benefits. As the SoC manufacturing process evolves to more advanced technologies, the I/O voltage of next-generation SoCs is dropping below 1.8V. A level shifter is required to connect a conventional 1.8V/3V serial NOR flash. This increases the cost and complexity of system design. A 1.2V serial NOR flash allows direct connection without level shifters, saving BOM cost and board space.
The 1.2V serial NOR flash complies with the standard SPI interface and delivers data transfer rates up to 42Mbytes/sec. It also has a flexible architecture, including 4KB uniform sectors and blocks.
