Dragonfly Pictures Inc. is the industry leader in small rotorcraft unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the United States. We develop robust and low-cost UAVs, have innovative rotorcraft design technology, extensive test knowledge, and supply UAVs to the US military. A UMAR drone equipped with an RF antenna can extend the line-of-sight range of ship radio from about 13 km (8 miles) up to 48 km (30 miles).
Unlike battery-powered multi-rotor drones that require battery changes every 20 minutes, wired drones receive power through a wire attached to a base station, allowing them to fly for hours or days. Dragonfly Pictures' wired multi-rotor drones are designed to follow mobile host platforms on ships, boats, trucks, unmanned watercraft, and unmanned ground vehicles.
DCDC converters used inside wired drones that are powered by a high voltage of 800V need to be as small and lightweight as possible. By reducing the size of the power conversion components, other value-added components can be installed. For high-level power circuit challenges, Dragonfly Pictures used Vicor's high-voltage BCM® in a thin VIA™ package to achieve high efficiency (98% - only 2% loss) inside the UMAR. Converts voltage from 800V to 50V.
Vicor's BCM is inherently free of harmonic noise and, combined with the effectiveness of filters built into the body, results in very low EMI noise. Therefore, the size and weight can be reduced compared to conventional DCDC converters.
