World's first* mass-produced driver monitoring function detects the effects of alcohol in real time

Gothenburg, Sweden, November 5, 2025: Smart Eye, a global leader in AI-based driver monitoring and in-vehicle sensing technology, announced that its Real-Time Alcohol Influence Detection Technology has been recognized as an Honoree in the Vehicle Technology & Advanced Mobility category of the CES 2026 Innovation Awards®.

Integrated into Smart Eye's proven Driver Monitoring System (DMS), this feature detects the effects of alcohol based on real-time driving behavior, helping to combat drunk driving, one of the leading causes of road accidents.

Smart Eye's real-time alcohol-impairment detection technology continuously analyzes subtle changes in eye and eyelid movements to detect visual signs of intoxication. Unlike traditional systems that rely on breath sensors, the technology uses a contactless behavioral analysis approach and is trained on real driving data collected from controlled alcohol-related experiments. It operates on existing driver monitoring system (DMS) hardware, requiring no additional sensors, calibration, or system modifications, enabling rapid and large-scale deployment for vehicle manufacturers and commercial vehicle fleets.

"Drink-impaired driving detection has been discussed in the safety field for many years, but few viable implementations have been demonstrated," said Martin Krantz, CEO and founder of Smart Eye. "By leveraging existing DMS hardware and traffic signals, this feature transforms a long-standing safety challenge into a technology that can actually be deployed at scale. Because it is trained on real driving data and aligns with where regulators are already headed, it is both practical and future-proof for our roads."

The feature is designed to comply with strict data privacy standards and operates entirely within the vehicle, without the need to record or transmit video. Its software-based design allows for delivery via over-the-air (OTA) updates and easy integration into existing vehicle and fleet management platforms. As regulatory bodies and safety programs around the world, such as Euro NCAP and the US HALT Act, introduce new requirements for impaired driving detection, Smart Eye's solution provides a practical means to meet these regulations and improve road safety.

The CES 2026 Innovation Awards® honor excellence in product design and engineering. Smart Eye's selection by a panel of expert judges demonstrates the increasing importance of impaired driving detection as a core feature in next-generation driver monitoring systems. Smart Eye will showcase its latest automotive innovations, including its real-time alcohol-impairment detection technology, at CES 2026, January 6-9, 2026, in Las Vegas.

■ Supplementary Information
This feature has been developed based on overseas laws and regulations and research data, and we cannot guarantee that it can completely detect drinking. In this demo, we are focusing on detecting driving behavior while intoxicated by drinking.
