Product Summary

Si828x is SKYWORKS' 1ch isolated gate driver lineup.

It has built-in functions effective for driving power devices such as IGBT and SiC.

Other than the Si8286, it has a Miller clamp to detect abnormal operations such as short-circuit events, a DESAT and soft shutdown function that can quickly turn off the transistor, and a FAULT feedback that notifies the system of an abnormality.

There are Si8281/82/83/84 with an isolated DCDC converter that can be driven using an external transformer, and Si8285/6 without DCDC, and both drivers can be used to drive motors with a minimum number of components.

Effective in highly efficient drive systems with high CMTI (Common mode transient immunity).

Achieves DESAT and Soft Shutdown <<1us

In driving IGBTs and SiCs, it is necessary to have functions such as detecting abnormal current flowing into the power element and safely turning it off. Protection operation must be performed at a speed of about 1us. The Si828x has a fast response from the detection of DESAT, so it can handle the high speed of 1u sec required for SiC.
The figure shows an example using an external circuit.
In addition, CMTI is also a high product, so it is possible to create a more efficient system.

The time from DESAT detection of the device to Soft Shutdown is also fast, about 300ns.
There is a trade-off between VDS spikes in shutdown speed, but the total time can be set to 1us or less if adjusted.

It also has an open-drain output FAULT signal terminal that notifies the controller of abnormal conditions, including the temperature of the driver IC.

The lineup includes Si8282 and Si8284, which can input and output voltages up to 24V by using an external transistor.

There is a lineup with functions such as fixed/variable frequency pulse skip mode, and the efficiency is about 83%.

A multi-functional half-bridge evaluation board for driving SiC and IGBTs.
The high side is driven by Si8285 and the low side by Si8284 with DCDC, and there is also a report using Wolfspeed's SiC module, which is very useful as a reference for actual circuits.
