Overview

Semtech  BlueRiver®  This is an AV-over-IP platform for the professional AV (Pro AV) market that can transmit uncompressed, zero-latency 4K/Ultra HD video over standard Ethernet.

The award-winning BlueRiver is the only technology that integrates all the necessary AV distribution and processing functions into a single chip (SoC) and controls them with a software-defined API (SDVoE™ API). It replaces traditional AV/KVM extenders, matrix switchers, video wall controllers, and windowing processors with a simple network consisting of transmitters, receivers, and general-purpose Ethernet switches.

It is being adopted in all fields where zero-latency 4K video is required, including education, healthcare, enterprise, entertainment, esports, hospitality, retail, broadcasting, government, and defense.

What is BlueRiver / SDVoE?

SDVoE (Software Defined Video over Ethernet)

BlueRiver is the only technology that integrates all the functions necessary for AV distribution and video processing into a single SoC (System on Chip) with a software-defined API. Because video, audio, data, and control signals can be routed independently via commercially available Ethernet switches, the system can be freely configured according to the application.

At its core is the SDVoE API, a standard interface that controls numerous SDVoE-enabled endpoints at a single system level, centrally managing switching, configuration, and video processing. SDVoE is a full-stack solution covering all seven layers of the OSI reference model, providing end-to-end infrastructure, transmission, processing, and control.
While other methods offer only partial solutions, SDVoE is significantly superior in that it allows endpoints from different manufacturers to interoperate with each other. It has become the most widely adopted standard technology, with hundreds of interoperable products deployed worldwide.

Challenges of the conventional method

  • AV matrix switches are expensive, fixed hardware with limited expandability.
  • External dedicated equipment is required for scaling, multiviewing, and video wall processing.
  • Each manufacturer uses its own unique specifications, resulting in a lack of interoperability.

Transformation by BlueRiver

  • Integrating video processing (scaling, compositing, video wall) into each endpoint.
  • Replacing matrix switches with general-purpose Ethernet switches significantly reduces costs and complexity.
  • A full-stack solution covering all seven OSI layers ensures interoperability.

Key points for selecting BlueRiver products

  • Choose based on the required functionality level. For simple distribution and switching only, select the AVP1000; if you need video processing such as video walls or multiview, select the AVP2000; and if you need bidirectional HDMI transmission, select the AVP2000T. All are interoperable, allowing you to build an optimal network by combining only the necessary functions for each node.
  • Choose your system configuration (AV-over-IP / point-to-point). For flexible switching of multiple inputs and outputs, choose an AV-over-IP configuration using a general-purpose Ethernet switch. For simple extensions between two points, choose a point-to-point configuration. All current AVP series devices support both configurations.
  • Choose based on transmission distance and media. For transmissions within a rack or on the same floor, use Cat cable (up to 100m). For longer distances, such as between floors or buildings, choose fiber optic cable (SFP+, up to 30km).
  • Check the video format requirements to ensure that the format of the content you want to transmit, such as 4K/60 4:4:4 or HDR10/Dolby Vision, falls within the supported range. BlueRiver supports all HDMI 2.0b formats.
  • For existing designs using AVX100/AVX200T, it can be replaced with AVP1000/AVP2000T via a drop-in compatible upgrade, and network (AV-over-IP) functionality can be added later through a firmware update.
