TinySwitch-5 uses a traditional flyback architecture, delivering up to 190W of power at 92% efficiency.
With over 6 billion units shipped, Power Integrations' iconic TinySwitch product family has established itself as the switcher IC of choice for power supply designs. Using basic diode rectification and optocoupler feedback, the family has set the standard for design simplicity and reliability for over 20 years. Now, the new TinySwitch-5 devices increase maximum output power to 175 W offline and 190 W with power factor correction, while achieving efficiencies up to 92% at full load—all without changing the schematic.
TinySwitch-5 ICs feature an advanced control engine that is up to 87% efficient at 1% load and seamlessly adjusts switching frequency and energy per cycle to optimize efficiency, even at light loads. This enables the power supply to deliver up to 220mW of standby power for display, control, and communication functions, while meeting the needs of appliance manufacturers who are subject to the 300mW standby power consumption limit mandated by the European Union ErP.
TinySwitch-5 devices are available in through-hole packages for maximum output power, and surface-mount packages for designs with integrated PCB cooling and no heatsink. The surface-mount option also includes a thermally enhanced package that enables up to 75 W without a heatsink. Input undervoltage and overvoltage protection ensures stability in regions with unstable mains power supplies.
TinySwitch ICs were the first to feature Power Integrations' award-winning EcoSmart technology, which has saved an estimated 200 TW-hours of power by reducing standby power since 1998. TinySwitch-5 continues the tradition by delivering high efficiency across the entire load range, dramatically increasing available power while maintaining design simplicity for bias and auxiliary power supplies for home appliances, computers, communications, industrial and medical equipment.
