InnoSwitch4-QR enables compact LED driver designs with >92% efficiency

The InnoSwitch4-QR flyback switcher IC family significantly improves efficiency in flyback converters up to 220 W, especially in applications where compact size is required. A new design report shows the benefits of InnoSwitch4-QR ICs in slim 100 W driver boards for industrial, commercial and residential LED line and linear luminaires with high input voltages (196-308 VAC).

Combining InnoSwitch4-QR devices with HiperPFS-4 power factor correction (PFC) control ICs in a heatsink-less design, the 16mm low-profile module with just 62 components achieves 92% end-to-end efficiency over the entire input voltage range and allows operation at ambient temperatures up to 55°C while still delivering flicker-free performance.

Key features of InnoSwitch4-QR

  • Integrated functionality: 750V PowiGaN switch primary side controller, FluxLink feedback, SR driver and secondary side controller in a small 24-pin low-profile package
  • Streamlined design: Highly efficient QR flyback and CCM PFC eliminates the need for complex half-bridge resonant topologies
  • Flexible output and control options: Supports dimming including 0-10V, PWM, DALI and can be configured for constant voltage (CV) or constant current (CC) output

As a front-end PFC converter, the HiperPFS-4 device integrates a continuous conduction mode (CCM) PFC controller and a 600V switch to provide:

• Power factor 0.95 or higher
• Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) less than 10% at nominal AC input voltage
• Zero-loss current sensing reduces component count and increases efficiency
