MultiLane QSFP-DD Loopback Module

Product Summary

MultiLane 's QSFP-DD Loopback Module is a module-type product that can confirm whether the network is functioning normally by looping back electrical signals from the transmitting side to the receiving side in a 400G communication environment.

In addition, it is also possible to customize simulated power consumption, temperature test, insertion loss and EEPROM contents.

Challenges when starting 400G verification

The transition from the current mainstream of 100G to 400G will not only meet the enormous bandwidth demand, but also enable new technologies. Therefore, more and more customers want to start 400G verification in-house.

However, at 400G, the power consumption is also high, so it is essential to prepare a heat dissipation environment when actually starting verification. This article introduces MultiLane 's loopback module, which is a great place to start testing.

QSFP-DD Loopback Module 3 Advantages

1. Easy to start verification

We often hear that it is practically difficult to prepare a set of 400G optical transceiver modules at the verification stage due to the cost. Compared to that, the loopback module is cheaper and easier to start verification. There is no need to worry about damaging the actual device because it is a device dedicated to verification.

2. Power consumption can be set

You can set the assumed power consumption value of the optical transceiver module used in the production environment to the loopback module. In addition, by inserting this product at the same time as the number of switch ports and setting an arbitrary power consumption value, verification close to actual operation can be achieved.

3. On-site visibility of module temperature

Normally, when measuring the temperature inside the optical transceiver module, insert the optical transceiver module into the switch and check the temperature by issuing commands one by one on the PC. This product has an LED display on the main body, and it is possible to monitor the temperature inside the optical transceiver module in real time without operating a PC.

Verification using QSFP-DD loopback module

MultiLane 's QSFP-DD loopback module has a product "ML4062-TL2a-C-LCD" that allows you to set the power consumption value and check the module temperature by LED display in addition to the function of the normal loopback module. . This time, I actually used it to monitor the temperature rise.

Test method

We measured the temperature inside the module when the power consumption was increased by about 1W in each of the above evaluation systems.

*Room temperature 20 ℃. Every time the power consumption is changed, the temperature after about 3 minutes has passed is observed.

Without a blower, just 8W or so will easily exceed 75 °C.  However, when there is a blower, it keeps below 70 degrees Celsius up to the maximum of 23.4W.

In order to maintain the operating temperature of about 70°C, which is the guaranteed operating temperature for general optical transceivers, it is necessary to verify the heat dissipation environment while fine-tuning the power consumption.

With MultiLane 's loopback module, you can easily check the temperature visually from the LED display attached to the module and verify various power consumption patterns.

Even if you feel that the hurdles are high before starting 400G, we would appreciate it if you would consider verifying using the loopback module first.
