This page describes Microchip re-timer product details. When data is transmitted over a cable or backplane using PCIe, which achieves high-speed transmission, the waveform is distorted due to amplitude attenuation and noise. In order for the receiving side to receive the data correctly, it is necessary to return the waveform to its original clean form. Using a retimer product compensates for the jitter, making it possible to transmit high-speed digital signals while preserving their waveforms.
There is a product called Redriver, which is similar to Retimer, but the difference is that Retimer has a built-in Clock Data Recovery (CDR) to extract the clock.
Microchip Retimer products support PCIe Express 3.0/4.0/5.0&Compute Express Link 1.1/2.0. It is possible to achieve more than 80% lower latency (Pin-to-Pin latency is less than 10 ns) than PCIe Spec. Various lane numbers (x1/x2/x4/x8/x16) can be selected, and various diagnostic functions such as real-time eye capture and loopback tests are supported by GUI tools. It also supports passive copper and optical cables and has high reliability features such as hot plug and surprise plug.
Retimer usage example
Retimer on riser card connects to expansion card
Retimer on motherboard connects to expansion cards
