The USB Type-C PD circuit is configured by combining a PD dedicated controller, MOSFET, ESD protection diode, etc. In this article, we will introduce a configuration example of a USB Type-C PD circuit along with an application example.
USB Type-C trend spreading
As the history of USB grows, the connector has evolved. When a new product has a different connector and requires a dedicated adapter, it becomes impossible to reuse the existing adapter, and unnecessary power adapters and cables end up being discarded as e-waste.
Therefore, standardizing power adapters and cables to USB Type-C is starting to attract attention from the perspective of SDGs, as it will lead to solving the electronic waste problem. In order to solve this problem, the EU will enact legislation from 2024, making it mandatory for all electronic devices, including smartphones and tablets, to be equipped with USB Type-C as standard. In addition, the amount of power required for products is increasing, and there is a need to improve the ability to charge it. Therefore, it is becoming common to install USB Type-C Power Delivery (hereafter, USB Type-C PD) function in order to support rapid charging.
Power specifications for USB Type-C PD
For USB power supply of 100W or less, the following voltage x current combinations are used.

For 100W or less, the maximum VBUS is 20V, so MOSFETs with a withstand voltage of 30V are often selected.
Also, depending on the USB controller, the presence or absence of the Nch MOS driver is divided, so it is necessary to use Nch MOS and Pch MOS properly. Please check the MOSFET list on the following page.

Application example: In-vehicle USB Type-C PD charging port
In-vehicle USB Type-C PD battery charging applications can be configured using Infineon's EZ-PD™ CCG7S/D series of USB-C PD + DC-DC controllers, as well as a wide range of communication ICs such as MOSFETs and LIN transceivers.

USB Type-C PD + If you want to use it as a general-purpose microcomputer, Infineon's product PMG1 series can handle it. PMG1 can control not only USB Type-C PD but also LEDs and motors.
Application examples: power adapters, outlets, etc.
Infineon's product PAG1 series can support cases where power adapters, wall outlets, and cable taps need to be converted to USB Type-C PD. PAG1 can be used as a set of primary side (PAG1P) and secondary side (PAG1S).
Regarding MOSFETs, we recommend Infineon's CoolMOS P7 family, CoolGaN™, for the primary side Nch MOSFET. CoolMOS P7/C7 is the most versatile MOSFET with an excellent balance of performance and price.
