Breakthrough CO2 sensor technology from Infineon

XENSIV™ PAS CO2 consists of a photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) transducer containing a detector, an infrared light source, and an optical filter, a microcontroller that performs signal processing and algorithms, and a MOSFET chip that drives the infrared light source on a printed circuit board. It is an integrated product. An integrated microcontroller performs advanced correction and setting algorithms along with ppm arithmetic.

The sensor uses a MEMS acoustic detector. By implementing the exceptional sensitivity of this acoustic detector in an integrated printed circuit board design, the required space is over 75% less than other true CO2 sensors on the market. As such, the XENSIV TM PAS CO2 sensor offers a size and cost advantage over modern NDIR sensors without compromising performance.

What is Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (PAS) Principle?

The PAS principle works as shown in the diagram above. A light pulse from an infrared light source passes through an optical filter tuned to the CO 2 absorption wavelength (λ=4.2µm). CO2 molecules in the measurement chamber absorb the filtered light and oscillate, producing pressure waves with each pulse. This is called the photoacoustic effect. A highly sensitive MEMS acoustic detector detects pressure changes caused by CO2 molecules within the sensor cavity, which the microcontroller converts to a CO2 concentration measurement and outputs. To obtain the highest possible accuracy of ppm measurements, the acoustic detector is optimized for low frequency operation and the absorption chamber is acoustically isolated from external noise.
