Introduction background

STV has been working on constructing a new in-house network with the aim of improving stability and bandwidth by changing the network topology. This project included the installation of a new optical fiber trunk line and the expansion of the in-house network bandwidth to 10G.

As the project progressed, it became clear that there was a discrepancy between the specifications of the optical fiber (single mode) and the optical transceiver module (multimode) that had been ordered from the network equipment manufacturer. Facing a delay in the launch of service and a risk of going over budget, Mr. Abe tried to solve the problem by using a "3rd Party transceiver."

Optical transceiver modules are important components that connect to network equipment and transmit and receive optical signals. However, genuine products provided by network equipment manufacturers are expensive and the selection is limited. On the other hand, 3rd Party transceivers allow you to flexibly select the product that is best suited to your network from a wide lineup, and can be introduced more quickly and at a lower cost than genuine products. In addition, there are many standards for optical transceiver modules and optical communications, and you must be fully aware of the specifications and compatibility.

Realization of network construction in a short period of time

Since the start of service could not be delayed, Abe made an urgent inquiry to Macnica which is actively promoting 3rd Party transceivers for JANOG and other companies.

Thanks to Macnica 's prompt arrangement of a verification module, we were able to start testing the week after the inquiry. With accurate technical support for connection verification with network devices thereafter, we were able to quickly confirm that the connection was problem-free in terms of both functionality and reliability.

Although the collaboration between STV and Macnica had made it possible to complete the network construction within the scheduled deadline and budget, it was soon decided that a related company would move into a floor with low demand for conference rooms, and the company was faced with the need to expand its network.

Unplanned network expansion

Abe was troubled by the completely unplanned expansion of the network. Although the installed optical fiber had a surplus of cores, the floor where the affiliated company was located was on the top floor and had introduced a satellite communication service for BCP, so the usage rate was higher than initially expected, and it was not possible to secure enough optical fiber to be allocated to the new affiliated company.

To address this issue, Macnica proposed the "10GBiDi transceiver." The 10GBiDi transceiver is an optical transceiver module that can carry out 10Gbps communication in both directions over a single optical fiber. Normally, two fibers, one for transmission and one for reception, are required for bidirectional communication, but the BiDi module uses wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology to achieve both transmission and reception over a single fiber. This reduces the amount of fiber used by half, saving on wiring costs and space.

By adopting the 10GBiDi transceiver, STV was able to accommodate network expansion without laying additional fiber.

Benefits

A year has passed since the network service using 3rd Party transceivers began, and STV is now able to enjoy a stable, high-speed network within the company, which has improved business productivity.
