Functional safety is the ability of a system to deal with all failures and ensure the safety of the entire system to prevent serious consequences such as injury or death to people, environmental pollution, and equipment damage. Functional safety standards apply to a variety of products and systems, including medical devices, automobiles, nuclear power, and industrial machinery, and each field requires an understanding of and compliance with the standards that are individually stipulated. However, understanding the standards requires a considerable amount of effort, and the hurdles involved in obtaining functional safety certification for products and systems are quite high.
