Typical Application Diagram

If you need to add AC or DC power monitoring to your device, the ACS37800 power monitoring IC greatly simplifies the task. Integrated into the core of the device, Allegro MicroSystems' current sensor technology leverages the Hall effect and galvanic isolation to provide reinforced isolation without requiring extra board space. When powered from the same power supply as the microcontroller unit, it reduces the size of your printed circuit board (PCB) by eliminating the need for multiple power supplies and digital isolation ICs.

The isolated current is measured by two Hall plates that differentially sense the magnetic field embedded in the conductor, eliminating the need for external sensor resistors, current transformers, or Rogowski coils. This sensing scheme enables highly integrated power monitoring ICs that further reduce PCB size and eliminate errors caused by stray magnetic fields.

Multiple parameters are user programmable, including averaging and zero crossing over time or channel and fault levels. In addition, all sensor functions and key power measurements can be read out via the I2C interface or SPI. Additionally, two dedicated pins for voltage or current zero crossing (ideal for dimming applications) and fast overcurrent fault (detecting short circuits) can be configured to flag under/overvoltage in Vrms. A graphical user interface (available for download on the Allegro MicroSystems software portal) expedites device configuration.

The ACS37800 is available in two variants in a surface mount SOIC16 wide, lead (Pb) free package: MA with 0.85mΩ inner conductor resistance and MC with 0.265mΩ inner conductor resistance.

The ACS37800 is fully calibrated before it leaves the factory and can be further calibrated in your application to improve accuracy.
