Small and low power consumption microcomputer with "FRAM"
MSP430FR2433 is a microcomputer provided by Texas Instruments. It has multiple low power consumption modes and FRAM in a small VQFN package (4mm x 4mm).
Therefore, it is ideal for sensing applications such as battery-powered IoT devices that require small size and low power consumption.
The MSP430FR2433 has the following key features:
1. No need to store data in SRAM with a coin battery
The FRAM in the MSP430FR2433 is non-volatile memory. FRAM offers ultra-low power consumption, high endurance, and fast write speeds.
The MSP430FR2433 has 15.5KB of embedded FRAM.
Therefore, for sensor applications, etc., there is no need for coin batteries for SRAM, which were previously required for data retention.
FRAM | EEPROM | FLASH | SRAM | |
memory type | non-volatile | non-volatile | non-volatile | volatility |
Rewriting method | Overwriting | Erase + Write | Erase + Write | Overwriting |
writing speed | super fast | low speed | mid-speed | high speed |
Rewriting times | 10 trillion times | 1 million times | 100,000 times | Unlimited |
2. Achieving the functions required for measurement applications on a single chip
The package size of MSP430FR2433 is very small, VQFN (4mm x 4mm).
In addition to interfaces such as UART, SPI, and I2C, it is equipped with 8 channels of 10-bit-ADC, making it possible to realize the functions necessary for sensing and measurement applications on a single chip.
3. Rich development environment, easy to start up
The "MSP-EXP430FR2433" evaluation board is provided for the MSP430, providing a development environment for immediate evaluation.
As a result, it is possible to achieve commercialization in a short period of time with minimal development resources.
Evaluation board "MSP-EXP430FR2433" for immediate evaluation
The MSP-EXP430FR2433 evaluation board comes with everything you need to develop with the MSP430FR2433, including an on-board debug probe for programming, debugging and energy measurement.
The debug probe board allows evaluation using supercapacitors. Evaluation can also be performed without using an external power supply.
This evaluation board can be evaluated immediately by:
1. Connect PC and evaluation board
Connect the evaluation board and PC using the included USB cable. Install the driver from the dedicated site.
You will also need Code Composer Studio (CCS), an integrated development environment from TI, and an IDE such as the IAR EW430.
CCS is provided free of charge and can be downloaded from here.

2. Debug pin
The MSP-EXP430FR2433 evaluation board provides both JTAG and Spy-Bi-Wire emulation capabilities.
Spy-Bi-Wire (SBW) is a serial interface developed by TI for the MSP430 MCU.
Spy-Bi-Wire uses 2-wire serial signals to communicate the debug protocol, while the general JTAG interface is usually 4-wire.
3. Run the demo and start evaluating right away
You can download the demo project for free from the dedicated site. You can start your evaluation immediately by running the demo project.
A demo can be found on this page.
