Let's write to a programmable oscillator using a programming kit! (Super easy)

SiTime's oscillators are programmable. Using the programming kit, you can easily program the samples at hand.

A wide range of specifications can be programmed, including frequency accuracy, power supply voltage, rise and fall times, etc.
By using a programmed oscillator and trying out different patterns, an optimal design can be achieved.
This time, I actually used the writing kit to write on a sample.

The writing kit we will use this time is sold by Macnica.

I actually tried out the writing kit (time required: 10 minutes)

1. Check the equipment you are using/Let's connect it to your PC right away

・SiTime Writing Kit Time Machine II

What's in the box:

①Quick Start Guide

② Writing kit SiT6150DK (the round white one)

3. Socket cards (SiT6160DK, SiT6161DK, SiT6165DK) *For each package

④USB cable

⑤ Tweezers

⑥Three kinds of fresh product trial set

- Single-ended: SiT2001 (SOT23-5 package)/SiT8008 (2520 package)

- Differential: SiT9121 (two types: LVPECL output 3225/LVDS output 5032)

・PC

When you open the box (P〇ste size) which looks like a game software, you will find each part.

All you have to do is connect it to your PC via USB. Simple!

It also comes with tweezers with the SiTime logo on them. It's cool in a subtle way.

It's great that blank items are included from the start.

You can also purchase additional units from Macnica, so feel free to try them out.
You can try both differential and single-ended oscillators. There are about three of each!

This is what it looks like when connected to a PC. It's as compact as a wired mouse.

You can do it at your desk without bothering the senior student next to you.

Any Micro-B cable will do, not just the one included.

The size is like this. On the right is the iPhone 15.

When I connected it, the bottom of the board lit up red!

2. Try inserting the device into the socket card

There are three types of socket cards available:

①2016/2520 (SiT6161DK: green card)

②5032/7050 (SiT6160DK: red card)

③SOT23-5/3225 (SiT6165DK: yellow card)

If you plan to implement the programmed device as is, we recommend inserting a blank product intended for mass production and programming it.

If the blank items included in the package do not have the size you want, you can purchase additional blank items.

There are three kinds of colorful socket cards. The left and right compatible packages are written on each card, so be sure to check them carefully.

Align the arrows on the socket card and the writing kit,

Please make sure to fit it properly before use.

Open the black socket part by hand and place the device with tweezers. After closing the cover, attach it to the programming kit as shown in the image on the left.

The photo shows a larger package for easier understanding.

Make sure to align the triangle part of the socket with Pin 1 (the round dot on the top of the package).

3. Software Installation

Install the latest version of the software from the SiTime page. (The latest version as of July 2012 is 2.32.0.4.)

It's not heavy so it doesn't take that long.

4. Now it's time to actually write!

Finally, place the device on the socket card, connect the kit to your PC, and start the software.

You should see the following screen.

This is the top screen. Logs are accumulated at the bottom.

By clicking the orange frame, you can select the device you have placed from the drop-down menu.

After making your selection, the programmable specifications will be displayed below, so select them one by one.

If you select all specifications, the full part number will be displayed. It cannot be rewritten, so we recommend double-checking by referring to the data sheet.

Finally, click the orange button!

It only took 1-3 seconds to program. Super fast. Done!

The written device can be freely used for evaluation.

5. Check the oscillator you wrote

I used an oscilloscope to check the waveform of the oscillator I had written.

I was able to check the set frequency, but since it was simply attached by hand, overshoot/undershoot occurred. If you properly mount it on the board and wire it correctly, you will get a nice waveform. Just for reference...

I simply attached it to a universal board in the laboratory.

How to use the software

This is a simple video tutorial on how to use the software. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

in conclusion

We recommend trying out several specifications at the elemental consideration stage, such as adjusting the output drive and frequency accuracy.

It can also provide countermeasures against EMI noise, so you can try out several to find the best one.

Writing kits and blank products are also available for purchase, so please feel free to contact us. We can also discuss free loans.

We can also ship what you have written in advance at Macnica, so we can provide immediate support even if you are short on time.
