"BG22E" is an ultra-low power consumption Bluetooth device that enables energy harvesting.

Silicon Labs' "EFR32BG22E (BG22E)" is an energy-efficientUltra-low power consumption Bluetooth device designed for best applications. It allows for maximum use of energy harvested from the surrounding environment, such as light, radio waves and kinetic energy, without sacrificing radio performance, enabling developments that optimize or eliminate battery use.

This time, we will introduce Silicon Labs' "EFR32BG22E," which advances the development of battery-free IoT solutions.

BG22E's approach to addressing IoT energy efficiency challenges

Silicon Labs aims to build a platform to address one of the key challenges in the IoT: optimizing power consumption and extending device lifespan.

In particular, the BG22E is an ideal platform for harvesting energy from the environment while minimizing power consumption. Its following features make it a device capable of energy harvesting:

Low power consumptionDeep Sleep W Take-Up: Achieves smooth energy mode transition
- Power consumption less than 17uJ
- 78% less energy required for wake-up compared to conventional devices
- Smooth switching between energy modes by reducing current spikes and inrush currents that can adversely affect energy capacity

Ultra-fast and low power consumption cold start
- Wake-up in 8 ms, power consumption is only 150uJ

●TxVery long intervalsDeep SleepMaintain state
-Extend battery life
-Multiple Wake-Up methods (RFSense, GPIO, RTC)

Use Case

Energy harvesting and energy saving technologies are bringing significant benefits to a variety of industries, helping to reduce energy costs, eliminate reliance on batteries, and lower carbon emissions through reduced battery waste. Electronic shelf labels (ESL), for example, are being rapidly adopted by retailers around the world to enable accurate pricing, inventory management, and loss prevention. Consumer applications include solar-powered TV remote controls, movable wireless lighting, and appliance switches, making everyday life more energy efficient.

In this way, the BG22E will be a key device for realizing a sustainable future.

Silicon Labs Evaluation Kits/Solutions

In collaboration with e-peas, the Energy Harvesting Explorer Kit enables developers to customize peripherals and debugging options to best suit their applications, facilitating development within the stringent constraints required by energy harvesting.

The kit includes three Energy Harvesting Shields, each optimized for a different energy source and energy storage technology, designed to match the EFR32xG22E Exploer kit.

  • The Dual Harvester Shield is based on e-peas' latest dual harvester AEM13920 PMIC and allows harvesting energy from one or two sources simultaneously. Use cases include two solar cells or a combination of a solar cell and a piezoelectric source to harvest energy from vibrations.
  • Based on e-peas' AEM00300 PMIC, the Kinetic Button Shield can temporarily power a wireless SoC using a kinetic switch.
  • The battery shield can be used for standalone debugging and battery life evaluation.
