What is the next generation smart home communication standard “Matter”?

Matter, the next generation smart home communication standard, was established by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).

A unified industry standard that ensures reliable and secure network connections.

It is now possible to connect various smart home products regardless of the home appliance manufacturer,
It is expected to "improve usability," "create new opportunities for product innovation," and "reduce development man-hours for home appliance manufacturers."

NXP Matter solution usage examples

NXP provides "microcontrollers", "processors", "Wi-Fi/Ethernet", "Bluetooth LE", "Thread", and "security" chip products necessary for Matter, and can propose comprehensive solutions.

<Supplement>

・"Wi-Fi/Ethernet" and "Thread" are used for data communication

- "Bluetooth LE" is used for commissioning (initial settings to securely connect to the Matter network).

The images below show Matter applications where NXP Matter solutions can be used.

Typical applications include "Wi-Fi products," "border routers that change from Wi-Fi to Thread," and "edge nodes that communicate using Thread."

Matter compatible NXP product list, evaluation board information

The table below summarizes the NXP products that can be proposed for each application name listed in Figure 1.

Information on the evaluation board is also included, so please check it as well.

The configurations that can be proposed are as follows.

・“Border routers” mainly include the i.MX 8M series that can run Linux as a host processor and various wireless chips.

・"Edge nodes" are mainly host processors that are added to the i.MX 8M series and include the i.MX RT series and various wireless chips that can operate on RTOS.

In addition, the K32W148, K32W061/41, and MW320 series are available as standalone wireless chip configurations that do not require a host processor.

・Since "Edge Node Sleepy" is mainly a battery-powered application, the K32W061/41 series is used as a standalone configuration with low power consumption.

Matter's security can be made even stronger by using EdgeLock products as a security chip. Please also see the EdgeLock product page below.
