Technical Features of Mini-Circuits Signal Generators

This article focuses on the Mini-Circuits signal generator "SSG-5N9G-RC," introducing its technical features and frequency/output level sweep function. For more details, please refer to the manufacturer's website below.
SSG-5N9G-RC

The SSG-5N9G-RC is a wideband signal generator compatible with 5GHz to 9GHz (C-band). It features a standard maximum output power of +23dBm, making it suitable for characterizing wireless equipment, high-frequency circuits, and various systems. In addition to CW output, it supports a variety of signal generation functions, including pulse sequencing, AM, FM, chirp signals, frequency hopping, and output level sweeping. This product supports daisy-chaining of up to 25 units and can be remotely controlled via Ethernet. Furthermore, as shown in the diagram below, its compact size, comparable to an iPhone, allows for use in a variety of locations.

Comparison with iPhone

Furthermore, Mini-Circuits provides GUI software for operating this product, along with software support including programming procedures. Another feature is the availability of models with limited frequency bands, allowing users to select the model that best suits their needs and thus reduce implementation costs.

Configuration via GUI software

Mini-Circuits provides free GUI software for operating the SSG-5N9G-RC. The GUI interface is shown below.

Mini-Circuits' dedicated GUI screen

In this example, the SSG-5N9G-RC is connected to the PC via USB. When you launch the GUI software from your PC and select the USB connection, the SSG-5N9G-RC's operation screen will appear.

The waveforms for PULSE, AM, FM, and Chirp signals are listed in the Mini-Circuits datasheet. Please refer to the datasheet for details on each function. However, the datasheet does not include specific examples of how the frequency hop and output level sweep of the SSG-5N9G-RC operate. Therefore, below, we will show how each function is configured from the GUI and demonstrate how the frequency hop and output level sweep actually work in a video.

Frequency and output level sweep function

From here, we will show you the actual operation of the frequency sweep and output level sweep functions of the SSG-5N9G-RC in a video.

In this video, to clearly demonstrate the operation of the SSG-5N9G-RC, a simulated receiver is used to extract a signal in combination with a 5.01GHz local signal. Please note that this video is intended to show how the frequency and output level change, and does not evaluate performance such as spurious emissions. For actual performance, please refer to the Mini-Circuits datasheet or use measuring instruments such as a spectrum analyzer.
