What is a 3 level inverter
A circuit or device that converts DC voltage to AC voltage is called an inverter. Circuit methods include 2-level inverters and 3-level inverters. A 2-level inverter results in a PWM waveform of +/-Vd centered around zero. A 2-level inverter, for example, can be configured with 3 pairs of upper and lower switches, for a total of 6 switches, for a 3-phase inverter, and is used in many applications.
On the other hand, a 3-level inverter will have a PWM waveform of +/-Vd and +/-Vd/2 centered around zero. The waveform and topology are as shown in the figure below, and the number of circuits increases slightly, but there are advantages in terms of miniaturization of the LC filter and improvement in efficiency. Conventionally, 3-level inverters have been regarded as circuits for handling high voltages, but with the diversification of power equipment, they are attracting new attention.
Advantages and disadvantages
merit
・The inverter output waveform becomes closer to a sine wave.
・Since the voltage applied to the switching element is half that of a 2-level inverter, there is little switching loss.
・Since the switching noise is also low, the size of the LC filter to be installed later can be reduced, making it possible to reduce the size and weight.
・Because the switching frequency can be increased, it is easy to increase the conversion efficiency.
Demerit
・The number of elements used increases and the circuit becomes complicated.
・Stray inductance tends to increase due to increased wiring.
Realizing the benefits
A power module with integrated circuit elements does not take up much space, and stray inductance can be reduced. Microchip has a lineup of SiC power modules that are suitable for 3-level inverter circuits and that can be applied to the NPC method and bidirectional switch method.
NPC method: A product with one phase as one module, with withstand voltages of 1200V and 700V (eg MSCSM120TLM08CAG).
Bi-directional switch method: A product that connects two switches with a common source connection, and has a withstand voltage of 1200 V and 700 V (eg MSCSM120DUM11T3AG).
In combination with phase leg or triple phase leg modules, bidirectional switching is possible.
