Features of the USB5744
The USB5744 is a 4-port USB3.1 (Gen1) hub controller with a built-in microcomputer provided by Microchip.
The USB5744 is USB 3.1 (Gen1) compliant and supports SuperSpeed (SS)/Hi-Speed (HS), Full Speed (FS) and Low Speed (LS).
A SuperSpeed hub can work in parallel with a USB 2.0 controller. So 5Gbps SuperSpeed data transfer is unaffected by slow USB 2.0 traffic.
The USB5744 has three major features.
- 4-port USB3.1 (Gen1) hub controller with built-in microcomputer
- Only 7mm x 7mm QFN package, industry's smallest and space-saving
- Supports general, USB battery charging
These features are explained below.
1. 4-port USB3.1 (Gen1) hub controller with built-in microcomputer
2. Only 7mm x 7mm QFN package, industry's smallest and space-saving
The size is 0.4mm pitch, 56-pin QFN package, the industry's smallest USB 3.1 hub. Suitable for designs with strict size constraints.
3. Supports general USB battery charging
The USB5744 supports battery charging from USB as follows:
- Supports USB-IF Battery Charging version 1.2 (DCP, CDP, SDP)
- Apple mobile device charger emulation
- China YD/T 1591-2006 Charger Emulation
- China YD/T 1591-2009 Charger Emulation
- Supports Microchip's UCS100x family of battery charge controllers
- Supports other mobile devices
Compatible with most common standards.
Therefore, it can be adopted without problems in many applications.
Evaluation board "EVB-USB5744" that can be tried immediately
An evaluation board EVB-USB5744 is provided for easy evaluation of the USB5744.
You can start your evaluation immediately with the steps below.
1. Connect the AC adapter
The evaluation board EVB-USB5744 can be powered by plugging the power plug into the 2.5 mm connector or by applying an external voltage (12V) to J6 Ext.
2. Execute configuration to the microcomputer
After powering up, the MCU starts loading the program from the SPI flash device.
You can select which SPI flash device to load by setting a slide switch and jumper pins.
Setting method to select SPI device (slide switch to SPI: blue LED lights up)
Setting method to select SMBus (Slide switch to Strap: Green LED lights up)
Using the SMBus requires the correct pull-up resistors by external circuitry. SMBus signals are accessible at J8, pin 1 and pin 3.
3. Select USB power to 4 downstream ports
USB power to the four downstream ports is controlled through the port power controller.
Each port has a USB battery charging power of up to 2.1A, so it supports up to 5A in total.
Application example
- USB hub
- Docking station for notebook PC
- computer motherboard
- Multi-function USB 3.1 Gen 1 peripheral
