〇 What is a hybrid RAID solution?
Hybrid RAID is a solution that combines SSDs and HDDs in a single array for redundancy. Write operations are performed to both SSD and HDD for redundancy, and read operations are performed from the faster SSD. This solution enables the ASR-6405E to deliver maximum performance and reliability.
o What are the benefits of a hybrid RAID solution?
Adaptec RAID cards write to both SSDs and HDDs, and read 100% from the SSDs, resulting in significantly better performance than HDD-only RAID arrays. Competing RAID cards, on the other hand, have slow I/O performance because both writes and reads are performed from both HDDs and SSDs. Hybrid RAID accelerates IOPS (Input/Output Per Second), reduces latency, hosts more users per server, and performs more transactions per second. This reduces the number of servers required to handle a given load. If you use one or more SSDs and combine them with HDDs to configure RAID1,10, a hybrid RAID is automatically created. Even if you configure a small capacity SSD and a logical array, the remaining HDD disk space can be used as another array, so the capacity is not wasted.
〇Usage example of hybrid RAID
Many small business servers are used for accounting software, small databases, mail servers, etc. and therefore require high performance storage components, where hybrid RAID can be beneficial.
The effectiveness of hybrid RAID is shown with an example of RAID1 (mirroring: storing the same data on two HDDs) + SSD.
・Even if you create a boot volume for the OS, the capacity of the 160GB SSD drive remains. The rest can allocate volumes for databases.
160GB hybrid RAID array reads 100% from SSD, dramatically speeding up OS boot times and database functions.
160GB is lost from the data RAID array, which is very small for a 3TB drive and has a small impact on utilization efficiency.

It seems common to have a mirroring configuration with two SSDs and two HDDs, but the reason why I dare to configure it with two RAID arrays of SSD and HDD is as follows.
・Since SSDs with low write speed specifications are not very fast compared to HDDs, performance improvement cannot be expected with RAID 0 of two SSDs.
・The read speed of SSD is very fast, and there is no difference in performance compared to SSD alone.
・Because it focuses on read speed, having two hybrid RAID arrays can provide the read speed of a 320GB SSD to the server while protecting the data in each SSD.
