1. About Automotive PSOC™ 4 HV MS

Infineon offers the high-performance, low-power 32-bit Automotive PSOC™ 4 (Programmable System On Chip) and PSOC™ 4 HV MS (High Voltage Mixed Signal) series of microcontrollers for automotive applications.

The PSOC™ 4 HV MS incorporates the industry-leading capacitive sensor that is a feature of the previous PSOC™. This capacitive sensor has evolved from the 4th generation to the 5th generation, enabling higher quality capacitive touch applications. In addition to the existing high-performance analog/digital components, the chip also incorporates an LDO that acts as a power supply IC and a transceiver required for communications, resulting in a higher performance chip.

In addition, the chip itself complies with ASIL-B functional safety standards, making it an IC with strong security capabilities.

Features of Automotive PSOC™ 4 HV MS

The PSOC™ 4 HV MS has the following features:

  • Equipped with 5th generation CAPSENSE™
  • Built-in high-precision sequential ADC
  • Built-in LDO rated up to 42V
  • Built-in LIN/CXPI transceiver
  • Reduced board area through integrated IC
  • Functional safety ASIL-B compliant

Equipped with 5th generation CapSense™ -MSC (Multi Sense Converter)-

The PSOC™4 HV MS is equipped with the 5th generation CAPSENSE , which has improved electrostatic touch performance and can now achieve a higher SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). By utilizing the high-sensitivity touch sensing function of the 5th generation CAPSENSE and a 12-bit high-precision ADC, it is possible to build a smart edge sensor that integrates a multi-sense converter and analog front-end, enabling the provision of a space-saving, high-performance sensing solution.

Integrated LDO and transceiver

The PSOC™ 4 HV MS series is a highly integrated automotive microcontroller with a built-in LIN/CXPI transceiver and a high-voltage LDO power supply.

The built-in LDO has an absolute maximum rating of 42V and can be directly connected to a 12V or 24V battery, eliminating the need for an external power supply IC, reducing the number of components and simplifying the design.

Furthermore, because the LIN/CXPI transceiver is also integrated, the microcontroller, power supply IC, and transceiver, which were previously used separately, can now be combined into a single chip. As a result, the board area can be reduced by up to approximately 50%, making a significant contribution to compact ECU design and cost optimization.

Therefore, the PSOC™ 4 HV MS is an ideal integrated solution for automotive systems that require space saving and high reliability.

Functional safety ASIL-B compliant

The PSOC™ 4 HV MS series complies with ASIL-B of ISO 26262 for functional safety. This enables designs that meet the safety requirements of automotive systems and is applicable to a variety of applications where safety is required. Infineon also provides the safety documents (Safety Manual, FMEDA, etc.) required to meet ASIL-B standards, which users can utilize to significantly reduce the effort required for functional safety development.

Furthermore, this functional safety feature makes it possible to use the technology in a wider range of in-vehicle applications, such as body control units, battery monitoring, sensor interfaces, and in-vehicle HMI, which were previously difficult to apply.

The PSOC™ 4 HV MS is a microcontroller solution that combines safety, flexibility, and development efficiency, contributing to the development of next-generation automotive systems.

2. Feasible application examples

The PSOC™ 4 HV MS series can be deployed in more advanced sensing applications in addition to basic body control applications such as steering switches, sunroof controls, and foot sensors, which were previously used in the PSOC™ family.

For example, metal touch buttons can be used to detect minute metal deflections, enabling switch operation without compromising the texture of the vehicle interior. Furthermore, by combining ASIL-B-compliant functional safety support with fifth-generation CAPSENSE™ technology, the technology can be used for applications requiring greater reliability and precision, such as human presence sensors, PTC heater control, and liquid sensing (liquid leak and water detection).

In this way, PSOC™ 4 HV MS goes beyond conventional HMI control and expands its capabilities for more advanced automotive applications in terms of both functional safety and sensing performance.

Possible Applications

3. Automotive PSOC™ 4 HV MS Product Lineup

The architecture of the PSOC™ 4 HV MS series is shown below. The PSOC™ 4 HV MS is equipped with 64KB or 128KB of flash memory, which can be selected depending on the application, allowing it to flexibly support anything from small-scale sensor control to medium-scale control logic.

The analog block is equipped with a 12-bit successive approximation type ADC (SAR ADC), which enables high-precision sensing of automotive signals. It also has a built-in comparator that is suitable for control that requires high-speed response.

The digital block is equipped with a TCPWM (Timer, Counter, PWM) module that supports PWM and timer control, making it suitable for lighting control, motor control, and more.

Furthermore, the PSOC™ 4 HV MS is equipped with a Serial Communication Block (SCB) that can handle UART, SPI, I²C, etc., facilitating flexible communication interface configuration. These functional blocks enable the PSOC™ 4 HV MS to complete analog, digital, and communication functions on a single chip, achieving high flexibility and space-savings for automotive applications.
