Blockchain basics

It has been a long time since Bitcoin and other virtual currencies have been widely recognized, but the “blockchain” technology, which is the core of virtual currencies, is used in various fields beyond FinTech.

What is blockchain

Blockchain is a distributed management technology in which all "nodes" (computers participating in the blockchain network) share the same data, instead of centrally managing data on one server.

Records of transactions are stored in blocks, and the data are connected in chronological order. Each block contains the contents of the previous block as a hash value. Hash values are generated by an algorithm called a hash function and are transformed only in one direction, so a given piece of data will only yield the same hash value.

If the contents of a certain block are tampered with, the hash value of subsequent blocks will be inconsistent with the legitimate one, and the block will be interrupted. Blocks after the break are discarded, and regular data is received from neighboring nodes to self-repair.
From this property, it can be said that the blockchain has excellent tamper resistance.


How blockchain works



So how are transaction records stored in blocks?

Users use their private keys to electronically sign transaction data. Digitally signed data (transactions) is temporarily stored in an area called a "memory pool". It is then stored in a block by passing verification using the public key paired with the private key.
