Nagasaki this time! JANOG52 with many changes from last time

JANOG52, which was held for three days from July 5, 2023, was held at Dejima Messe Nagasaki in Nagasaki Prefecture.

The JANOG (JApan Network Operators' Group) Meeting is an event held twice a year, and is a large conference that boasts the world's top-class attendance in the network industry. This time, there were more than 140 sponsor companies and a total of 2,293 local participants, the largest number ever, and nearly 900 people participated online. In the large venue next to Nagasaki Station, people involved in networking​ ​from all over the countrygathered together and various discussions took place, with some even saying, "There are no more network engineers in Japan." .

What I felt was a big difference from half a year ago was that the atmosphere before COVID-19 had returned. The number of participants was large and the event was lively, and even with the relaxation of restrictions on movement, there were many differences from previous events in terms of management. As with the theme of this time, "eXchange," I felt that this was the time to make a switch. Also, in the sense of "exchange", JANOG's famous "social gathering" changed its format, and a networking event called "JANOG Evening" was held. I would like to touch on this in an article.

Macnica will be on display at three booths!

Macnica exhibited three booths each on "Optical Transceiver Modules," "Security," and "Open Networking."

Among them, two demonstrations were performed at the introduction booth of "10G Tunable SFP 80km transmission demo/Analyzer product for 800G".
One was 80km long-distance transmission using Coherent (Finisar brand) 10G Tunable SFP module, and we were able to see how the wavelength is automatically tuned. The technology that makes this possible is a unique technology patented by Coherent called “Flextune™”. In order to make Flextune™ easier to understand, we played a video explaining it in comics at the venue. Many customers were interested in our booth after seeing this video. The FLextune™ function is also installed in Coherent's new product "100G ZR QSFP28-DCO", which is scheduled to start mass production in 2023, and many people have shown great interest.

In the second MultiLane demo, we saw on the GUI how the Analyzer product for 800G acquires the I2C signal between the host module. Many visitors were interested in the multiple functions of this product, such as not only acquisition of I2C signals, but also evaluation of the host device.

At the "Security" booth, we introduced the Skyhigh SSE solution for customers who have issues in achieving secure access to systems and clouds from inside and outside the company.

Finally, at the ``Open Networking'' booth, there was a ``What is the best choice for network construction in terms of cost, performance, quality, and support? ] For customers who have problems, we introduced the differences such as advantages and disadvantages for each network construction type. At this booth, we handed out icing cookies and dorayaki with original characters and logos as novelties. This was also very well received, and we received a lot of happy comments from our customers!

I made a presentation at BoF!

I also participated in BoF this time. BoF stands for Birds of a Feather, and provides a place for lively discussions at the venue. Compared to the fact that there is no selection for "Nora BoF", the JANOG52 meeting executive committee normally selected 7 programs from the viewpoint of "usefulness, clarity, and new discoveries".

Some people were standing around so that they could see the equipment as closely as possible, and it was not a one-sided lecture, but rather a question-and-answer session, and the atmosphere was such that even participants could have discussions. I felt

A must-have local gourmet for JANOG!

​JANOG Meetings are held all over the country, and many of you must be looking forward to the specialties of each place. At the venue, we were able to enjoy Nagasaki's specialties such as "Sara-udon" and "Kakuni-man".

When I got the tickets that were distributed at the sponsor booths of Kamome, Sakura, Diamond, and Platinum, I was able to exchange them for Chirin Chirin ice cream, which is familiar around Meganebashi Bridge!

"JANOG Evening" held for the first time this time

The social gathering that had been held in the past changed its shape, and this time, "JANOG Evening" was held on the second day with the aim of "many people", "feel free to participate" and "find friends". rice field. Partly because there was no limit on the number of people, the outdoor venue was filled with people, and some said, "There were so many people that I couldn't move." Exchanges were held at roundtables on 15 themes such as "Security," "CATV operators," and "Heisei born."
