In one case, we had a customer who was working on research and development in collaboration with a university. They had established a certain level of technology in a prototype, and when they were about to enter the commercialization phase, they wanted to consult with a manufacturing professional. In fact, they had designed the control circuit based on information collected on the Internet, and the peripheral circuits were also created from a collection of experimental parts, so they were worried about whether the design was sufficient for commercialization.

To be honest, the specifications were unreasonable. From the information I gathered on the Internet, it worked in theory, but it seemed that the design did not take into account the margins when raising or lowering the environmental temperature, so it would stop working.

Therefore, Monocon® started by reviewing the specifications and proposing the optimal parts. Macnica has professionals in peripheral circuits such as driver circuits and power supply circuits, and can propose the optimal parts and circuits from among the many manufacturers.

Of course, it is important to ensure the functionality of the product, but the appearance is also important. At the prototype stage, you may be worried about whether the finished product will turn out as you imagined, but Monocon® will propose a specific plan including the casing.

If you have a prototype that is close to the finished product, you can get immediate feedback from those around you. the Company use 3D printers to quickly create mockups, so you can visualize how they will work and look at an early stage, which is a powerful tool for convincing people involved.

As an example, we created a mockup of smart glasses, as shown in the photo above.

We started by asking a designer to draw a design, shared the final image with a rendering, and produced a mock-up using a 3D printer, which turned out to be satisfactory. Although it does not incorporate the functions of smart glasses (electronic circuit boards), it is the quickest and easiest way to get reactions from those around you.

You can also add your own touches to the mockup. In this example, we devised a paint method to achieve a color that would bring the smart glasses closer to their final form. The glass part is painted bluish black, and the color is adjusted to create a metallic look, while the band part has a different texture and a matte finish. By incorporating various requests, you can create something that is closer to the actual product image.

In particular, for products that are worn on the human body, such as smart glasses, aesthetics are important, but at the same time, consideration must be given to allergic reactions, resistance to external environments, and ease of processing during the manufacturing process. By selecting materials with comprehensive consideration of these factors, we can aim to develop products that can be used safely for a long time.

In this project, in which we adopted this resin material, we had detailed discussions with the client from the material selection stage onwards, and selected a plant-based material that was soft, durable and gentle on the human body, as well as a partner with the technology to mold this material. I believe that consideration in material selection will become an important approach in the future from a sustainability perspective as well.

Aiming to develop products that customers can use safely for a long time

Regarding the topic of corrosiveness, we have previously conducted experiments with the participation of experts. We conducted corrosion tests using artificial sweat, a substance that resembles human sweat.

We once had a customer contact us about a certain body-worn product, where the color of the electrodes changed after about a month of use. After investigating the issue over several weeks, we found that there were some parts of the product where sweat was causing bridges between the electrodes, and we analyzed the situation to determine that this was the cause of the corrosion.

On this occasion, we discussed the materials and surface treatment of the electrodes with the parts manufacturer, came up with a method to minimize the impact of costs, and overcame the challenge.

In addition, there are an increasing number of cases where EMI countermeasures are required. As long as electrical equipment is in operation, it will emit radio waves to some extent, but depending on the environment in which the product is used, if these radio waves are not kept to a minimum, they may adversely affect other electronic devices in the vicinity. (This is why there are restrictions on products that emit radio waves to prevent them from affecting electrical systems when an airplane takes off or lands.)

Depending on the product and usage environment, there are regulations and certifications stipulated by laws and regulations, and most of these require consideration from the development stage. In order to prevent the trouble of having to redo things (man-hours and costs), it is important to 1) take various measures to prevent them, and 2) conduct proper and accurate evaluations.

In addition to the usual standard evaluations, we listen carefully to our customers' usage environments and methods and conduct necessary environmental tests in order to develop products that our customers can use safely for a long time.
