Features of ROS-compatible inertial measurement unit ADIS16470

The ADIS16470 is an inertial system with a 3-axis gyro sensor and a 3-axis accelerometer. Each inertial sensor within the ADIS16470 combines industry-leading MEMS technology and signal conditioning. Each sensor's sensitivity, bias, alignment, and linear acceleration (gyro sensor bias) characteristics are evaluated with factory corrections. As a result, each sensor has an individual dynamic correction formula for highly accurate sensor measurements.

In this article, we will explain the following three major features of ADIS16470.

  1. Achieves performance and durability for industrial equipment with a surface mount package
  2. High stability and factory calibration enable highly accurate measurements
  3. Easy evaluation with robots, drones, automatic guided vehicles, etc. by supporting ROS

1. Achieves performance and durability for industrial equipment with a surface mount package

The ADIS16470 can measure 6 degrees of freedom with its built-in 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyro sensor.
The input range is ±40 g for the accelerometer and ±2000 °/sec for the gyro sensor, allowing wide range measurement. In addition, the noise characteristics of the acceleration sensor are 23 μg/√Hzrms, and the gyro sensor is §0.003°/sec/√Hzrms, achieving ultra-low noise.

The interface is universal Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) compatible, and the package is a small 11mm x 15mm x 11mm 44-pin BGA.

2. High stability and factory calibration enable high accuracy measurement

The ADIS163470 has high stability and enables highly accurate measurements. The main specifications regarding stability are as follows.

≪Bias stability during operation≫
・Acceleration sensor: 10 μg
・Gyro sensor: 8°/hr

≪Stability of sensitivity to temperature≫
・Acceleration sensor: ±0.1%
・Gyro sensor: ±0.3%

The sensitivity, bias, and axial alignment of the ADIS16470 are factory calibrated over a compensated temperature range: −10 °C to +75 °C.
The ADIS1647x series has multiple product lineups with different specifications such as built-in acceleration sensors and gyro sensors.

3. ROS compatible makes it easy to evaluate robots, drones, automated guided vehicles, etc.

Analog Devices, Inc. has released the ADIS16470 ROS (Robot Operating System) compatible driver on Github.

ROS is increasingly being used to develop algorithms and systems for communication robots, robots used in factories and offices, drones, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), etc. The ROS-compatible driver facilitates evaluation when the ADIS16470 is installed, reducing the time needed to develop advanced robot systems.

"ADIS16470/PCBZ" board ready for evaluation

The ADIS16470/PCBZ breakout board from Analog Devices, Inc. facilitates prototyping connections between the ADIS16470 and embedded processor platforms. The breakout board is compact at 33.25 mm x 30.75 mm and features a convenient 16-pin (2 x 8), 2 mm pitch connector and 2.3 mm diameter mounting holes in each corner.

It can also be operated on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 systems via USB by connecting to the Windows Compatibility Evaluation System EVAL-ADIS2.
