Large Current, High Efficiency, Small Power Module LTM4700 Features

The LTM4700's innovative packaging technology minimizes the impact of system size and cooling costs. It also integrates configuration registers, built-in memory for fault logging, data conversion circuitry and digital interfaces for system diagnostics and protection, and is nearly half the size of competing devices.

In this article, we will discuss the following three major features of the LTM4700:

  1. Dual 50A/single 100A large current output
  2. Realizes high efficiency and small package even with large current
  3. Can be controlled, compensated and monitored via IC

1. Large current output

The LTM4700 is a μModule🄬 power product that integrates power functionality in a compact molded plastic package.

Analog Devices' μModule power products have a wide range of output currents. Among them, the LTM4700 has achieved dual 50A/single 100A high current output.

The µModule architecture can also combine up to eight devices to deliver up to 800A of load current, supporting the high power requirements of processors such as FPGAs, ASICs, GPUs, and microprocessors.

2. Achieves high efficiency and small package even at large currents

The LTM4700 uses an innovative heatsink packaging technique to keep the operating temperature down to 73°C. With 200LFM airflow and 70°C maximum ambient temperature, it delivers a full 100A when converting from 12V input to 0.8V output. This results in a peak conversion efficiency of 90% from 12V input to 0.8V output.

3. Can be controlled, compensated and monitored via I2C

The LTM4700's built-in analog-to-digital converter (ADC), digital-to-analog converter (DAC), and EEPROM allow power parameters to be monitored, logged, and controlled via an I2C PMBus interface. The built-in ADC is 16bit ΣΔ and can measure current values with high accuracy of ±3%.

For noise-sensitive applications, the switching frequency can be synchronized to an external clock from 200kHz to 1MHz. It also has the ability to protect devices and loads from fault conditions such as overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature. It integrates registers for various configurations, built-in memory for fault logging, data conversion circuitry and digital interfaces for system diagnostics and protection.

These functions enable the following data read/write and settings via the I2C interface.

Readable data
  • Input voltage/ output voltage
  • Input current/ Output current
  • temperature
  • Operating peak value
  • Fault/warning
  • Fault Log recorded in EEPROM with built-in ECC

"DC2702A-A" board ready for evaluation

The DC2702A-A powers up to default settings and generates power based on the set resistance without the need for serial bus communication. This allows you to easily evaluate DC/DC converters.

To fully explore this part's extensive power system management capabilities, download the GUI software LTpowerPlay™ to your PC and connect it to the board using LTC's I2C/SMBus/PMBus dongle DC1613A.

LTpowerPlay allows you to reconfigure parts at any time, save configurations to EEPROM, and view telemetry for voltage, current, temperature, and fault status.
