What is ADSP-CM40x ideal for industrial motor control?

Motors consume over 40% of the world's electricity consumption. Therefore, in recent years, regulations on power consumption of motors have become stricter, and demand for reducing power consumption is increasing. As a result, the mainstream motor drive method used by semiconductors is the PWM method, or pulse modulation method. Motor control also requires advanced computational abilities such as differentiation and integration. Analog Devices offers the ADSP-CM40x mixed signal control processor, which is equipped with the advanced PWM and calculation functions required for motor control.

High precision PWM module suitable for motor control

Analog Devices' ADSP-CM40x mixed signal control processors are equipped with a high-precision PWM module, allowing you to control 3-phase AC motors, brushless DC motors, 6-step control, switched reluctance motors, etc. It is possible to control. The precision PWM module is equipped with three PWMs, each of which can output four high-side drive signals and four low-side drive signals, which can be configured via software. In addition, the high-precision PWM module can output up to 12 drive signals, allowing you to control multiple motors.

The functions of this high-precision PWM module are broadly divided into four parts.

1. Easy motor control by synchronizing each PWM channel

By synchronizing the three PWMs using a common timer "PWMTMR0", it is possible to generate the pulse modulation required for motor control.

In motor control, it is important to prevent the high-side drive and low-side drive from turning on at the same time and damaging transistors such as IGBTs due to arm short circuits.

The PWM controller has the ability to capture trip signals. Generally, when a short circuit occurs in the power inverter and the transistor is detected to be out of saturation, it will provide a fault signal to the controller side.

Detecting this fault signal allows you to shut down the PWM modulator and protect your hardware.

4. Timing engine for smooth motor control

Using interrupt detection from the ADC, a control routine can be called to update the duty cycle register based on the motor feedback signal. In other words, flexible motor control can be achieved by changing the PWM duty ratio based on the feedback signal from the motor.

As mentioned above, motor control can be easily performed by using a high-precision PWM module. In addition, we have prepared sample programs for these four controls, so you can immediately implement them.

Processor that performs advanced calculations required for motor control

The ADSP-CM40x mixed signal control processor uses Arm® Cortex®-M4, which operates at 240MHz. Cortex-M4 has a floating point arithmetic unit. It also supports the DSP instruction set, allowing you to perform the calculations necessary for motor control. Also, since it is equipped with SIMD, vector processing is also possible.
