Hello, this is Taro.
This time, I will write about LVDS (Low voltage differential signaling).

Overview of LVDS

LVDS is one of the differential signaling interfaces.
There are various standards for differential signals, each with different amplitude values and termination methods.
Benefits of differential signaling include:

• Small voltage swing on wiring and low power consumption
• Low EMI due to low field emission on differential traces
• Higher speed is possible due to small amplitude
• Resistant to noise because it looks at the difference between two signals

Disadvantages are that two wires, Positive/Negative, are required, and the length of the two wires must be equal.

Differential signal Two amplitude measurement methods

There are two methods for measuring the amplitude of a differential signal. Single-Ended and Differential.
Single-Ended indicates the voltage difference between the two signals that are actually output. It is written as Vpp in the data sheet.
On the other hand, Differential indicates the value obtained by subtracting the voltage value of the Negative signal from the voltage value of the Positive signal. It is written as Vdiff in the data sheet.
You can't really tell the difference with just words (laughs).

Below is a diagram of the difference between Single-Ended and Differential.

Thus, the amplitude of the differential signal depends on the measurement method.

Note on Differential Signal Amplitude

As shown in the figure above, we know that the two amplitude measurement methods give different values, but when should we be careful?
Be careful when reading the datasheet.
For example, when looking at the electrical characteristics of a device's differential input voltage, we have to be careful about which value we are referring to.
In some cases, the electrical characteristics may not be satisfied.
Regarding Slew Rate, it is also necessary to pay attention to which measurement method, Single-Ended or Differential, is described in the data sheet.
In some cases, timing constraints may not be met.

You need to be careful about various things, but that's when our technical support comes in handy!
Once again, thank you for your continued support.
