Hello. It's a plum rice ball.

This time, I would like to introduce PowerPlay Power Analyzer, a power consumption estimation tool.

PowerPlay Power Analyzer

The PowerPlay Power Analyzer is a power estimation feature in Quartus ® II.

It is a tool that you can use when the design is completed.

It can be run from the PowerPlay Power Analyzer Tool in the Processing menu.

Very easy to use.

The design is ready, so just press the Start button.

It is known that the power consumption estimation is strongly influenced by the signal toggle rate.

In PowerPlay Power Analyzer, there are two methods: "calculating the power consumption based on the toggle rate set by the user" and "calculating the toggle rate from the output waveform of the simulation and calculating the power consumption".

Simulation yields a more accurate toggle rate and therefore a more accurate power consumption estimate.

I understand calculating the toggle rate in the simulation to estimate the power consumption.

What value should I put in the toggle rate set by the user?

What is Toggle Rate?

Toggle rate is the rate at which an internal node changes with respect to the rising edge of the clock.

For example, if only 1 out of 4 nodes changes with respect to the rising edge of the clock, as shown in the figure below, the toggle rate will be 25%.

Do this calculation on every clock rise and average the toggle rate you should enter.

It is extremely difficult for humans to calculate this.

By default, the toggle rate is set to 12.5%.

This is said to be a typical value for the toggle rate of 16bit counters.

Underestimating toggle rate means underestimating power consumption.

Therefore, it is recommended to set the toggle rate to at least 12.5% or higher.

Toggle rate can be set by launching the PowerPlay Power Analyzer Tool and setting it as shown below.

Summary

We found that there are two different tools for estimating power consumption in Altera FPGAs:

・ PowerPlay Early Power Estimator

・ PowerPlay Power Analyzer

I would appreciate it if you could estimate the power consumption according to the user's development stage.

*The calculated power consumption is only an estimate and may differ slightly from the actual power consumption on the board.
