Small and medium-sized enterprises are also targets of cyber attacks. The first step in security measures is to take into account the IPA's "Five Information Security Principles."

Ransomware attacks are being reported every day, and cyber attacks such as malware and unauthorized access are on the rise. What's more, it's not just large companies that are being affected.
"According to a survey by the National Police Agency, more than 60% of ransomware victims are small and medium-sized enterprises*. As it has become more difficult to attack large companies that have strengthened their security measures, attackers may be increasingly targeting mid-sized and small enterprises that are said to have weaker security measures," points out Tsukada Manabu of Macnica. Even so, some managers say, "We don't have any information that would be targeted by attackers, so we're not in trouble." However, in reality, there is information that cannot be lost, such as contact information for customers and business partners, and sales information.
"If a company operates an e-commerce website and its personal information is stolen due to unauthorized access, it will be required to provide an explanation to its customers and other parties involved. If its core system is affected by ransomware, it will be unable to operate for several weeks, which will not only damage sales but also cause a loss of trust and could result in the suspension of business transactions."
"As the term DX symbolizes, many companies are conducting business over the internet. The more DX accelerates, the more important security measures become, so we need to invest in them."

The question is how to proceed with security measures. One issue is likely to be budget. In response, Tsukada advises, "Rather than viewing security measures as a cost, consider the impact of any incidents that may occur and think of them as a necessary investment to continue your business."
Another point is the order in which measures should be implemented. "We often hear from our small and medium-sized enterprise clients that they don't know where to start. It would be easier to implement measures if there was a measuring stick to indicate where to start."
