What is GSMA and SGP32?

Introduction

As the adoption of IoT devices continues to grow, ensuring communication flexibility and security has become an important issue.
eSIM technology is attracting attention as an alternative to conventional physical SIMs, and its ability to manage profiles remotely is a major advantage for industrial and service applications.
In this column, we will introduce the GSMA, which is formulating the standard specifications for eSIM, and SGP.32, the latest specification for IoT.

What is the GSMA?

GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association)

It is an international industry association whose members include telecommunications carriers, device manufacturers, software providers, and others from around the world.

Its main role is to support the development of the global mobile ecosystem through the formulation of technical specifications for mobile communications, the standardization of SIM and eSIM, and the establishment of security standards.

In particular, with regard to eSIMs (embedded SIMs), the specifications set by the GSMA have been widely adopted as global standards, enabling flexible device connectivity and remote management.

SGP Series Overview

The specifications for remote provisioning of eSIMs (remote rewriting of SIM information) formulated by GSMA are called the "SGP series."

They are classified according to their intended use and target devices as follows:

Model subject specification
M2M model IoT devices for businesses SGP.01 / SGP.02
Consumer Model Smartphones, tablets, etc. SGP.21 / SGP.22
IoT Model Various IoT devices SGP.31 / SGP.32

Each specification is optimized for the device's usage environment and management method, and the IoT model in particular is designed to accommodate the future expansion of the IoT market.

Features of SGP32

SGP.32 is the latest eSIM specification designed for IoT and offers the following advantages over previous models:

  • ・The latest specifications designed for IoT

It is compatible with a variety of IoT devices (sensors, trackers, wearables, etc.) and also takes into consideration low power consumption and compact size.

  • ・In some cases, a direct contract with a telecommunications carrier is not required

In some use cases, profiles can be distributed and managed without a direct contract with a carrier, increasing deployment flexibility.

  • - Flexible profile management and enhanced security

You can add, delete, and switch profiles remotely. The latest encryption technology is used to ensure the safety of your devices and networks.

  • ・Scalability according to device type and use

Specifications can be expanded and customized depending on the type of device and its use, and the structure makes it easy to accommodate future technological advances.

Summary

As IoT evolves, flexibility and security of communications are becoming increasingly important themes.
SGP.32, developed by the GSMA, is the next-generation eSIM specification that meets these needs and will bring new possibilities to the introduction and operation of IIoT devices.
In this article, we have introduced the overview and features of SGP.32. In future blogs, we plan to delve deeper into more specific use cases and key points for implementation, so please keep an eye out.
