How to use SaaS now

If you work in the technology industry, you probably feel that "as-a-service" software products have been around for a long time. In fact, even consumers are familiar with “software as a service” or “SaaS” products. Some of them are so ubiquitous in our daily lives that we no longer think about how they differ from other purchased products and services. Take this opportunity to consider the following example.

  • Cloud storage subscriptions (via Apple, Google, Dropbox, etc.). If you purchase a certain amount of cloud storage for a monthly or yearly fee, your photos, emails, contact list, etc. will be automatically backed up.
  • Video streaming services including Internet subscription versions of cable channels such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime and ESPN.
  • Music streaming services like Spotify offer music and podcasts, as well as access to original radio shows.
  • Amazon Prime also offers subscriptions to toilet paper, shampoo, pet food and even magazines.
  • Business and work services such as Microsoft Office 365 (now fully online), Adobe Creative Cloud, and other paid items.

It's been years since I was conscious of such services being "delivered as SaaS", but this shows how these services fit into our daily lives.

One of the characteristics of SaaS is continuous added value. This is why many customers move from the basic free version of the service to a paid subscription model. Apps like Calm and Headspace are good examples of this business model. Users download the app and access limited, free content, but are often lured to subscribe by the broader, more regularly updated content available with a subscription. For example, the free version of Headspace offers 10 guided meditation courses, while the subscription version gives you access to hundreds of meditation courses, with new ones added weekly or daily.

Since such services have become mainstream, Deloitte has started calling this model "XaaS" or "Everything-as-a-Service".

Why XaaS took root

Why is the XaaS model ruling everything from how we buy dishwasher detergent to how we listen to music, how we store family photos, and how we navigate our day-to-day work? Some of the answers to this question apply more to SaaS business services than to XaaS services, such as the fact that work has largely moved to the cloud. However, what is important when using XaaS is "flexibility".

financial flexibility

XaaS is typically immediately cancelable with no long-term financial obligation. For consumers, a one-year subscription is considered "long-term," so most apps and services are billed monthly. Prices for more specialized services are also falling.

Flexible access

Thanks to the XaaS model, customers can download and start using products and services immediately. You can also access customer service 24/7, use products and services on your mobile device, get updates, upgrades and add-ons in seconds, and sometimes for free. As consumers become accustomed to this type of service, it is starting to become more and more common in the business world.

Demand for XaaS was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led many people to work remotely from home and rely more than ever on cloud and SaaS services. Irregular working hours and the need for flexibility due to childcare obligations and other non-work obligations further drove the XaaS transformation.

Now that consumers and businesses alike have grown accustomed to the XaaS model, XaaS isn't going away any time soon. Consumers are buying more apps and subscriptions than ever before, due to the prevalence and lower prices of apps and subscriptions, and businesses are now using the cloud more than they could have imagined just a few years ago. I came to use it. Today, it's hard to find a company that doesn't have a Zoom or GoToMeeting account, but also a webinar service account or a professional network account like LinkedIn. It's hard to imagine most companies giving their employees network and account access only through their desktop computers in the office.

SaaS (and XaaS) will live on, and companies that don't look to the model will find their digital transformation stalled.

AI development is also starting to be offered on XaaS. For more information, please take a look at "Fully customized AI service (CrowdANALYTIX)" where the developed AI model is implemented on the cloud and provided as an AI service dedicated to customers (AIaaS).
