Although the term AI has been buzzing around in various media, AI and related terminology can be confusing for those just getting started.

  • Where to start with AI?
  • How should I optimize my business?
  • In the first place, how should we explain the essence and effects of AI to others?

In order to avoid the above confusion, let's unravel the topics and terms that are often heard in AI.

What is AI (artificial intelligence)?

AI means using the latest data science such as machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning to perform certain tasks on behalf of humans. These algorithms are developed using a dataset of input and output pairs called training data.

For example, suppose you take an image of a dog or cat and create a model that outputs "cat" or "dog" based on the display content of the image. To train this model, the algorithm needs training data on hundreds of images of cats and dogs to distinguish between "cats" and "dogs." Using these images, the model learns which pixel combinations could represent a 'dog' or 'cat', and gradually refines its recognition accuracy. Once the model is trained, it will be able to produce accurate output (decisions) even when new cat and dog images are provided.

What is the difference between AI and RPA (robotic process automation)?

RPA is a great technology for automating repetitive tasks. A typical example of its use is that it can perform various routine tasks (clicks, keystrokes, etc.) that are performed on a computer more accurately and faster than humans.

AI, on the other hand, is better suited for less defined tasks, such as "I want you to tell me the characteristics of this image" or "I want to understand the emotions of the characters in this video". AI does not have pre-defined steps to an answer like it does with RPA.

What is the difference between AI and predictive modeling?

Predictive models are built using machine learning techniques to help automate tasks traditionally done by humans. In other words, a prediction model is a kind of AI model.
