Upgraded AIS system also adds collision risk prediction for drivers, real-time road condition alerts and cloud connectivity for over-the-air updates to the entire vehicle.

Gothenburg, Sweden, June 11, 2025: Smart Eye, a global leader in Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS), has announced an upgrade to its AIS system with real-time alcohol intoxication detection and over-the-air updates. This upgrade is the first system to be able to detect alcohol-induced impaired driving ability via DMS, providing a powerful tool to help automakers operate their fleets more efficiently while meeting increasing regulatory requirements.

Smart Eye's AIS system is an aftermarket comprehensive driver assistance system designed for commercial vehicles. Combining custom-designed software and hardware, AIS detects signs of driver drowsiness, distraction and now intoxication, helping to create a safer driving environment and better manage risk for fleet operators.

This update introduces four major new features:

- Detection of alcohol influence
Advanced eye and facial movement analysis identifies behavioral patterns associated with intoxication and delivers real-time alerts.

- Collision risk prediction
We have integrated technology from Greater Than, a leading risk intelligence company, to calculate a predictive risk score based on in-car driving behavior.
This enables vehicle managers to identify and mitigate high-risk driving.

- Real-time weather insights
Provides weather information, including road condition warnings (such as ice and heavy snow), helping drivers adapt to changing conditions.

- Cloud connection function
In addition to the three new functions, the cloud connection built into the hardware enables OTA software updates and centralized management of AIS-equipped vehicles.
Fleet managers can remotely adjust settings, check system status, and streamline maintenance work, helping to reduce costs and downtime.

While the system provides powerful safety insights, it is designed with strict privacy protection in mind. All data processing is compliant with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and respects the privacy of individual drivers, even for customers outside the EU. Customers can also choose to operate the system in a setting that does not record or store video.

"We are thrilled to be working with Smart Eye to bring this technology to market," said Martin Krantz, founder and CEO of Smart Eye.
"The timing of this release is no coincidence, as impaired driving detection is becoming an increasing focus for Euro NCAP and regulators around the world. Impaired driving detection in in-car technology has long been a 'future goal', but we have been investing in the area for several years now to develop practical solutions. With this update to our AIS system, we prove that it is possible to translate safety innovations into products that can actually be used on the road."

"We are thrilled to be working with Drunk Driving to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic," said Stacey D. Stewart, CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
"Drunk driving claims more than 12,000 lives each year in the United States, making it one of the most preventable yet serious public safety challenges. For 17 years, victims and survivors of this crime have advocated for drunk driving prevention technology to be installed in all new cars, and as a result, the United States now has legislation mandating safety standards to achieve this goal. The technology announced by Smart Eye represents an innovation in our industry and an important step towards a future where we eliminate illegal and dangerous drunk driving."

Liselott Johansson, CEO of Greater Than, said:
"Our collaboration with Smart Eye has added a new layer of driver risk intelligence inside the vehicle. the Company proprietary AI quantifies the impact of driver behavior on risk and predicts collisions before they occur, enabling fleet managers to identify factors that affect risk levels and help prevent accidents before they occur. This is a natural extension of Smart Eye's 'safety first' technology and we are proud to support this effort."
