The new TOPSwitchGaN IC more than doubles output power, reducing system cost, complexity, and design time.
San Antonio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--APEC 2026: Power Integrations, a leader in high-voltage power conversion ICs, has announced a groundbreaking technology in flyback topologies. This expands the power handling capacity of flyback converters up to 440W, addressing areas that previously required more complex resonant or LLC (Low-Coolant) architectures. The new TOPSwitchGaN™ flyback IC family combines the company's groundbreaking PowiGaN™ technology with the iconic TOPSwitch™ IC architecture to simplify development, eliminate the need for heatsinks in many applications, shorten development time, increase productivity, and reduce overall system costs.

TOPSwitchGaN expands the scope to power bands that were previously unattainable with flyback designs, allowing engineers to achieve both high efficiency and high performance in a much simpler configuration."
The TOPSwitchGaN IC achieves an efficiency of 92% across the entire load range from 10% to 100%, and its power consumption is kept below 50mW in standby and power-off states, fully meeting European ErP (Energy-related Products) regulations. It is an ideal choice for high-performance consumer electronics, e-bike chargers, and industrial equipment applications.
PowiGaN switches significantly reduce RDS(ON) compared to silicon, thereby lowering conduction losses and greatly improving the power handling capabilities of flyback converters. The new product features 800V PowiGaN switches, offering both excellent surge withstand capability and low switching losses. This allows for operation at switching frequencies up to 150kHz, enabling smaller transformers.
The no-load power consumption, even with line sensing, is well below 50mW at 230VAC. Furthermore, with a 300mW input at 230VAC, it can secure a maximum output power of 210mW, allowing it to operate necessary housekeeping functions when the device is in standby mode.

The new IC is available in two package options. For ultra-thin designs, a low-profile eSOP™-12 surface-mount package is available, achieving up to 135W (85-265VAC) without a heatsink, making it suitable for consumer electronics applications. The vertical eSIP™-7 package minimizes PCB footprint while providing thermal impedance equivalent to TO-220 package components. With the addition of a metal heatsink using a simple clip, it can accommodate an extended power range for applications such as power tools, e-bikes, and garage door openers. The TOPSwitchGaN IC is pin-compatible with the TinySwitch™-5 offline power switcher IC, allowing designers to use the same design methodology for a wide range of applications from 10W to 440W.
