First 1700V GaN Switching Power Supply IC Achieves 90% Efficiency at DC 1000V Input
We have introduced the industry's first 1700V Gallium Nitride (GaN) switch as a new member of our InnoMux-2 IC family, greatly expanding the range of applications for GaN technology. InnoMux-2 devices enable the design of single-converter flyback power supplies with up to three independent outputs.
The achievement of the 1700V rating in Power Integrations' PowiGaN technology marks a watershed moment in the evolution of GaN power electronics, enabling GaN devices to replace expensive silicon carbide (SiC) transistors in three-phase meters and industrial applications such as auxiliary power in car chargers and solar inverters. The new ICs easily support supplies with a nominal voltage of 1000V DC and deliver 90% efficiency at up to 100W.
The 1700V InnoMux-2 IC combines the benefits of four pioneering innovations from Power Integrations:
・ 1700V PowiGaN Switch: Industry-leading voltage ratings for gallium nitride
・ InnoMux-2 multiple output function: Independent output control without a downstream regulator
・ FluxLink Regulation: Communication across an isolation barrier without using a photocoupler
・ One-chip zero voltage switching: Minimize switching losses without active clamping
InnoMux-2 devices allow system engineers to rethink power architectures and incorporate a DC-DC stage into the main power system. With each output controlled to within 1% accuracy, the InnoMux-2 controller manages light-load power delivery and eliminates the need for dummy resistors, reducing no-load power consumption.
The following evaluation kits are now available to order:
RDK-1053 – 60W flyback converter with two independently controlled outputs
・Efficiency at full load is 90%
・DC 70V to DC 1000V input
5V / 2.5A and 24V / 2A outputs, each controlled to an accuracy of ±1%
・Output voltage protection without the need for a photocoupler for protection circuit
