Mechanical cracks are a serious problem in capacitors, but Knowles'Open ModeandTandemproducts are designed for applications that require high reliability from a fail-safe perspective, in the unlikely event that a crack does occur.

Open Modecapacitors are designed to ensure a sufficient distance between the internal electrodes to prevent mechanical cracks that may occur during board assembly from connecting to the internal electrodes.

Tandemcapacitors have two electrodes arranged in one device, and are designed with a fail-safe perspective so that even if a crack occurs on one side, the other side can withstand it.

In addition, both Open ModeandTandemcan be combined withKnowles' proprietary electrode,FlexiCap, to further reduce the possibility of a crack causing a short circuit failure, even if a crack does occur in the capacitor.

Even if a crack were to occur at the edge of the capacitor, the capacitor is designed with a "safe zone" on both ends, as shown in the figure, so that only the innermost part of the capacitor is the active area. We assume that the crack will occur at the end of the capacitor, but because the internal electrode pattern is pulled back from the opposite edge of the chip, even if a crack is induced, it is much less likely to propagate through the active overlap area and cause an electrical short.

Sometimes called a serial design, this design works by eliminating the short circuit path between electrodes of opposite polarity, since a single capacitor has a structure equivalent to a series connection of two capacitors. Therefore, even if a crack occurs at the end of the capacitor and one capacitor is destroyed, the other capacitor will still function, preventing the circuit from being electrically shorted. In addition, Tandem products only require one capacitor instead of two regular capacitors to provide redundancy from the perspective of functional safety,whichisalso effective in saving space on the board.
