What is Power Delivery

Power supply up to 100W (20V/5A) exceeding USB2.0/3.0 is possible. Furthermore, it is possible to perform data communication in Alternate Mode and data roll (swap USB host and device). By utilizing Power Delivery, you can contribute to increasing the number of compatible devices and shortening charging time.

Type-C market trends

With Type-C, data/power/image transfer can be achieved with a single cable, and in recent years it has been increasingly adopted mainly for PCs/smartphones. In the future predicted by the world, it is said that Type-C will be standardized in cars in 5 years, and that all existing power ports will be replaced with Type-C chargers/outlets in 10 years.

 

The adoption of Type-C in smart speakers, conference system equipment, wearable cameras, and game consoles is also on the rise, and the wave of market launches is surging.

Type-C realizes universalization of AC adapter

Existing AC adapters have unique connector shapes and are not interchangeable, so the number of AC adapters increases in proportion to the number of products purchased by users, which increases the hassle of management and disposal.

Type-C PD Design Issues Engineers Face

Converting a barrel connector to Type-C requires deep knowledge. Firmware development is required to implement the USB PD stack. Infineon's BCR products support the USB PD profile of USB-IF certified and popular Type-C adapters. Since it is possible to set the PDO only with voltage dividing resistors, there is no need to develop firmware, shortening the development period, and furthermore, it is possible to consider BOM cost reduction due to the enhancement of protection functions.

・On-chip overvoltage protection function (OVP)

・ESD protection function (CC, VBUS_IN, DC_OUT, D+, D-, HPI_SDA and HPI_SCL )
