This may be out of the blue, but did you know that there are actually three types of SensorTag IoT evaluation kits, which are often introduced in articles on Macnica Online Services? This time, we will introduce the features of each SensorTag.

Three types of SensorTags introduced this time

  • CC2650STK: Multi-standard supporting Bluetooth Low Energy, 6LoWPAN and ZigBee
  • CC3200STK-WIFIMK: Low power wireless SimpleLink Wi-Fi
  • CC1350STK: Bluetooth Low Energy and Sub-1GHz long range wireless

CC2650STK can use 3 wireless standards just by changing the FW

CC2650STK (Texas Instruments product: TI product hereafter) is a small red package with 10 types of low power consumption sensors and devices supporting 3 types of wireless standards such as BLE, ZigBee, and 6LowPAN. Battery operation is possible using

The low power consumption enables applications that do not require a battery.

Also, with Bluetooth Smart, if you use the SensorTag app (iOS, Android), you can connect to your smartphone in just 3 steps, establish a connection with the cloud, and enable online use of sensor data.

Three features of SensorTag (CC2650STK)

No gateway needed with CC3200STK-WIFIMK!

It utilizes CC3200, a low power SimpleLink Wi-Fi device from TI. This low-power technology allows the SensorTag to run on only AAA batteries, making it an ideal demonstration platform for battery-powered applications.

The Wi-Fi SensorTag Kit is designed to connect to any Wi-Fi network without a gateway and is easily provisioned and connected to the IBM Quickstart cloud.

Unfortunately, this product does not support an expansion board for writing FW, so if you want to further build a microcomputer, please purchase the CC3200MOD LaunchPad.

CC1350STK supports Sub-1GHz in addition to BLE

CC1350STK is a Bluetooth Low Energy and Sub-1GHz long range wireless SensorTag kit.

CC1350STK

Although it looks similar to the CC2650STK, it is based on the SimpleLink dual-band CC1350 wireless MCU.The CC1350STK can connect directly to smartphones and tablets using Bluetooth, and has a range of several kilometers with a Sub-1GHz radio interface. It also realizes the communication function of

Common points and differences of three types of SensorTags

Common point

The following three points are common.

  1. Equipped with 10 types of sensors that can acquire various information
  2. Free iOS or Android™ app available
  3. Provide circuit/block diagrams, BOM cost, design files, etc. (See Reference Designs below)
