GitHub Universe 2018 participation report!

2018/11/08 (Thu)

GitHub Universe, which has been held every year since 2015, was held again this year. GitHub Universe is the largest annual user conference held by GitHub. This year it was held in San Francisco, California, USA from October 15th to 17th.

Significance of the conference

"GitHub Universe is a conference for the builders, planners, and leaders defining the future of software" This is the theme of Universe.
GitHub is in a position to "think together" with Universe participants to create the future of software development, and the conference is a place to discover, learn, and connect.

Recently, there have been an increasing number of cases where materials for conferences held overseas can be downloaded from the web or live-streamed. If you want to know the contents of the session, you don't need to bother to go to the site. I think there are many people who think that, but communication with engineers gathered from all over the world and many ecosystem partners, and the experience of local realism can never be achieved remotely.
It was an event that once again made me realize that this is the significance of holding a conference.

New function announced! The centerpiece is GitHub Actions

The keynote speech on the first day of the conference was given by GitHub's Senior Vice President Technology, Jason Warner. At the beginning, I looked back on the 10-year history from the start of the GitHub service in 2008 until it grew into a huge community with more than 31 million users around the world.

In 2010, the Pull Requests feature, which you are all familiar with, was announced. In this Universe, GitHub Actions was announced as a feature with the same impact as the announcement of Pull Requests.

GitHub Actions

In a nutshell, GitHub Actions is a service that automates developer workflows. Users can freely define workflows on GitHub that link with Docker containers triggered by events on GitHub. You can build code, run tests, deploy to the cloud, and much more.
GitHub Actions is a service that complements and coexists with 3rd party tools from the perspective of automating the entire workflow of the development team, rather than replacing the tools provided by ecosystem partners.
Currently, a limited beta version has been released on GitHub.com, and we plan to release the official version and adapt to the Enterprise version in the future.this pageYou can apply to participate in the beta version from

I would like to introduce other functions that have been announced.

Suggested changes

Ability to suggest code changes through comments in Pull Requests and have these suggestions applied or edited during the code review process.

GitHub Connect

This function allows you to use both GitHub.com and the on-prem version of GitHub Enterprise together. In GitHub Enterprise 2.15, which was released at the same time as GitHub Universe, the function of "Unified Search" has been expanded, making it possible to search private repositories of Business Cloud.
"Unified Contribution" is a function that allows you to display your contribution across both services and post more accurate contributions on your profile.

Enhanced security alert functionality

This was announced in last year's Universe, but it is a function that warns if there is a known vulnerability in the project (library) that the source code of the repository depends on. Previously, it supported JavaScript, Ruby, and Python, but this time Java and .NET have been added to the target languages. (The audience cheered when the addition of .NET was announced.)

GitHub October 2018

Continuing from last year, we were able to see various interesting numbers regarding statistics related to GitHub. GitHub has more than 31 million users, and 8 million new users registered in 2018, indicating that the community continues to grow. Also, looking at the growth rate of Contributors, it is growing significantly in emerging countries such as Southeast Asia and Africa. Although there is data that more than 80% of GitHub users are outside the United States, we can see that users are spreading worldwide regardless of country or region. By the way, looking at the top rankings of Contributors, Japan was in 8th place. (It manages to stay in the top 10.)

JavaScript, Java, and Python were the top three in the ranking of development languages. Kotlin, HCL, TypeScript, etc. seem to be growing rapidly.

Octoverse is also published on the web. You can see various statistics related to GitHub, soplease visit it.

Transformation in non-IT companies

Many GitHub user companies gave presentations at Universe. What was particularly impressive this time was that there were many non-IT companies on stage. American Airlines, who gave a keynote speech, is practicing hackathons in-house to improve operations and services.
In addition, there were sessions such as Walmart Inc.-Mart, the world's largest supermarket chain, and NASA's inner source initiative. I realized again that GitHub is spreading even in industries other than IT/software.

ecosystem partner

In the venue, many ecosystem partners set up booths that provided coffee, booths that exhibited radio controls that had nothing to do with the exhibition content, and booths that provided freshly baked waffles. .

CI/CD tool vendors such as CircleCI and Travis CI, and kanban tools such as ZenHub and Waffle.io exhibited booths from different vendors in the same field. rice field.

From Japan, SideCI, which provides the code review automation tool Sider, was exhibiting. I'm kind of happy.

lastly

Until last year, GitHub Universe was held in an abandoned warehouse on the pier of San Francisco, but this year it was held at the Palace of Fine Arts, which was built in 1915. It is a magnificent and historical building reminiscent of ancient Greece.

When I entered the venue, the interior was as I expected, and it was a GitHub-like interior.
There was a shop with GitHub goods, and a corner where you can create your own Octocat.
As I said at the beginning, there are many things that can be achieved only by being there. Why don't you all participate in Universe next year?

See you soon. Until the end Thank you for reading.
